MSSU hosts a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma; an American freshman honor society. It was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923. It is the oldest and largest freshman honor society and now has more than 375,000 chapters. and to qualify:
Freshmen who receive an invitation to join will complete a membership form and pay his or her one-time only dues. Members will receive a certificate of membership, a lapel pin or a charm, and a Phi Eta Sigma t-shirt.
