Attendance and Re-enrollment Policies

Enrollment Confirmation in Lionet

Students who are pre-registered for the upcoming term must complete the Enrollment Confirmation process to indicate they plan or do not plan to attend.

Confirmation periods are:

  • Fall semester: August 1st through Monday of the 3rd week of the semester
  • Spring semester: January 1st through Monday of the 3rd week of the semester
  • Summer semester: May 1st through Monday of the 2nd week of the 8-week session.

Students will be reminded each semester through emails to their MSSU issued email and other avenues to confirm their enrollment.

  • Students who do not officially cancel their registration will be responsible for tuition and costs.
  • Non-attendance does not constitute withdrawal from class(es).

Class Attendance

MSSU does not have a formal class attendance policy extending beyond when class rosters are due to the Office of the Registrar. Faculty members may keep records of attendance in all regularly scheduled courses at Missouri Southern. The primary objective of a student and professor is the student's attainment of course goals. It is recognized that students who achieve those objectives are normally those who attend class regularly. The professor, when giving a final semester grade, bases their evaluation on how well the student has achieved the course goals.

For financial aid purposes, if a student misses any class for ten (10) consecutive working days, the faculty member will report the last attended date in writing to the Office of the Registrar using the Last Date of Attendance form.

Students who miss classes do so at their own risk and must assume the responsibility for work missed because of class absences. Professors are willing to assist students whose absences are caused by valid illnesses, University approved activities and extenuating circumstances. The professor may require whatever evidence is needed to support the reason for absence.

The attendance record is significant to the total record and is useful in guidance and counseling. When absences are excessive, the professor may report the fact to Student Services and they will in turn counsel with the student. Any student earning a grade of 'F' must have the last attended date recorded on the grade entry portal in Lionet. All students who stop attending class should also have the last attended date recorded on the Final grade entry portal.

Students should be aware that absence from class invariably has a built-in penalty of lower academic achievement. Excessive absences usually result in failure to achieve the course goals.

Instructor Class Attendance Roster Submission to the Office of the Registrar

For full term 16-week classes, students not attending class or participating in the first two weeks of classes will be crossed off class rosters for non-attendance/non-participation on attendance rosters and dropped from the class. Attendance rosters are due to the Office of the Registrar the Thursday of the second week of the fall and spring semesters, and the Thursday of the first week of the summer semester. Re-enrollment occurs the week after instructor class rosters are due to the Registrar’s office.

For part-of-term classes for fall, spring, and summer semesters, students not attending class or participating the first week of classes will be crossed off the class roster for non-attendance/non-participation and dropped from the class. Attendance rosters are due to the Office of the Registrar the Monday of the second week of class.

Re-enrollment Policy

Re-enrollment occurs the week after instructor class rosters are due to the Registrar’s office.

Students taking traditional or combination of traditional and online classes seeking re- enrollment should obtain a “Re-enrollment” form from the Registrar's Office, collect instructor signature approving re-enrollment into each class dropped, receive  Bursar's Office   approval with a signature, and return the completed form to the Registrar’s office for re-enrollment.

Students taking online only classes students should contact email it to their advisor their instructors seeking re-enrollment approval and copy both Bursar and Registrar’s offices at registrar@mssu.edu and bursar@mssu.edu. If the instructor gives their permission and the Bursar’s office approves it, they will notify the Registrar’s Office for re-enrollment. If the Bursar’s office does not approve it, the student will not be re-enrolled.
