The Biology and Environmental Health program bridges life sciences and environmental health, offering students the opportunity to explore the intricacies of life while contributing to environmental preservation. The program currently enrolls 68 degree-seeking students, with an additional seven pursuing certificates.
Dr. John Messick and his wife, Nancy, both retired from Missouri Southern State University. John, who joined MSSU in 1983, served in several roles, including professor, department head, dean of Arts and Sciences, and vice president for Academic Affairs. He was granted emeritus status upon retiring in 2013 and continues to serve as an adjunct instructor. Nancy worked as an administrative assistant at both the department head and vice-presidential levels and later became assistant to President Julio León. The Messicks have established an endowment for the program, providing a current gift and including MSSU in their estate plans. The endowment will offer ongoing financial support, ensuring students have access to modern equipment and resources.
"It’s a belief to always give back for what you are given," the Messicks said. "Missouri Southern has been a great place to work and build friendships. As retirees, we appreciate staying connected to the university."
