The respiratory care program attends the Missouri Society for Respiratory Care State Conference held each spring at Marriott's Tan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach, Missouri on the Lake of the Ozarks.
The annual Conference is a combination of informational speakers on a variety of topics, an exhibit hall with all the latest equipment and academic competition (sputum bowl.)
The Missouri Southern State University Respiratory Class also submits research papers to the John Rogers Memorial Scholarship Competition. MSSU has had many students receive awards in this competition.
Missouri Southern has entered teams in the state sputum bowl competition and has received numerous trophies. MSSU student sputum bowl teams have represented Missouri at the National level at the American Association for Respiratory Care International Congress which has been held in the following cities: Anaheim, New Orleans, Tampa, Las Vegas, Orlando and San Antonio.
The MSSU student team won the national sputum bowl competition in 2007 in Orlando. The team consisted of Sonny Glover, Dale Benfield, Charity Ezell and Sherry Whiteman.
The respiratory care program prides itself in continually assisting with various health fairs throughout the community. The MSSU respiratory care program participates in community health fairs in association with local hospitals. We also participate in National Respiratory Care Week.
The Respiratory Care Club participates in the annual 4-States Heart Walk and received the traveling trophy for the most money raised by an educational institution.
