Southern Media Showcase

Media Showcase 2020


Students from around the region participated in Media Showcase in 2020 by submitting entries online.   The awards were announced in a virtual format presentation on December 9.  Medals for students winning awards are being sent to the schools for distributing to students.

Competition Categories


Publications

  • Best Overall Publication - Submit two publications: one from Spring and one from Fall.  If a publication has not been created for Fall 2019, one from Fall 2018 may be submitted.
  • Publication Sweepstakes
  • Column - Writing should deal with campus or local issues.
  • Editorial Writing - State a position and offer a solution about a campus or local issue, from the publication point of view.
  • Feature Writing
  • Feature Photography - In addition to submitting a photo, include a cutline.
  • News Photography - In addition to submitting a photo, include a cutline.
  • News Writing
  • Sports Photography - In addition to submitting a photo, include a cutline.
  • Sports Writing
  • Page One Design
  • Info Graphic -A graphic and/or visual representation of information, data or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly.  Should relate to an article in the publication.

  • Animation - Computer graphics or other creative animation, entries must be original. (3 minutes max.)
  • Comedy - Comedy themed creative video production.  May be original or adapted from a previously published source but all footage must be original. (10 minutes max.)
  • Drama - Dramatic creative video production - may be original or adapted from a previously published source but all footage must be original. (10 minutes max.)
  • Documentary - A production focusing on a social issue. (5 minute minimum, 30 minutes max.)
  • Commercial - Video advertisement intended to make or help make profit. (30 seconds or 1 minute max.)
  • PSA - A Public Service Announcement with a message in the public interest (30 seconds or 1 minute max.)
  • Music Video - Music can be original or previously recorded; all footage must be original. (5 minutes max.)
  • Five Second Video - Must have a storytelling theme.  Exactly five seconds in length.
  • Four Lines of Dialogue (3 minutes max.) - Use the dialogue provided, containing only the dialogue in the order presented:

     Do you see this?
    I can’t believe it.
    How did it get here?
    I would hate to see it go.

  • News Package - A story/report that includes soundbites, cover video, and a voice over by the storyteller (3:30 maximum)
  • Sports Package  - A story/report related to sports that includes soundbites, cover video, and a voice over by the storyteller (3:30 maximum)
  • Sports Programming  - Portion of a play-by-play sports program, or other special sports-related projects (30 minutes maximum)
  • Podcast  - A personal audio recording that includes a conversation about a topic of interest for broadcast to an audience, may include a music bed and sound effects. (10 minutes maximum)
  • Audio PSA - A Public Service Announcement with a message in the public interest (30 seconds or 1 minute maximum)

Also, teachers are invited to submit nominations for students they feel are deserving of the "Passion for Video" award.  It honors a student who has shown exceptional talent and interest in video production.   Nomination letters and a sample of the student's work may be emailed to Judy Stiles at stiles-j@mssu.edu
