December 2020


After more than 34 years of hosting Newsmakers, Judy Stiles shares a look at some of the guests interviewed on the program.   The program features clips from some of the interviews, going back to the 1980s.  It will air weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAhdXifWQjA&t=1367s

Joplin homes under renovation and plans for historic celebrations are the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the week of December 13.   The interview features Community Historian Brad Belk, discussing work on the Schifferdecker house and other homes.   It airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS YouTube site at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7_LakDgoKY&t=280s

KGCS provides live coverage of the MSSU Commencement ceremonies on December 11 and 12.  The walk-through ceremonies are being held starting at 3:00 Friday afternoon and at 2:00 Saturday.   In addition to the live coverage, KGCS is selling DVD copies.   A link to order online is on the KGCS website,  www.mssu.edu/kgcs  .

KGCS features performances by the Missouri Southern Music Department in December.  They include the performance “Caribbean Rhapsody in Brass and Steel” and the “Seasonal Choral Flourish.”  The presentations were held in November 2020.  Both may be seen evenings on KGCS and on the station YouTube site, KGCS Missouri Southern.

The Newsmakers program airing the week of December 6 takes a look at a new course focusing on drones at Missouri Southern State University.  Course instructors Brian Jones and Dr. John Messick discuss the course and many applications for drones.  The program airs weeknights and is also posted on the station YouTube site.

November 2020


KGCS will once again provide live coverage of home Missouri Southern women’s and basketball games for the 2020-2021 season.   Students, faculty and staff will team up to bring the games to area viewers.  The first telecast is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 3, starting at 5:30 p.m., when the women tip-off against Northeastern State University.  The men’s game will follow that evening.  Additional games scheduled for December are on Dec. 5, 17, and 19. 

The Newsmakers program airing the week of November 29 on KGCS-TV focuses on a special presentation of Caribbean music by the Southern Orchestra.  It features Dr. Canes Nicolas, Assistant Professor of Music at MSSU and Rudy Perrault, guest composer.   They share information about preparations for a Caribbean-themed concert at Missouri Southern.  The interview airs weeknights at 5:30 on KGCS-TV.  It is also posted on the station YouTube site, KGCS Missouri Southern, at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jNqzbnQw1A

Seventh District Congressman Billy Long was the guest on the Newsmakers program airing the week of November 8 on KGCS-TV.  He provided comments following the General Election and challenges facing Congress.   In addition to airing on KGCS, the program is posted on the station YouTube site at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rc79hWWucoM

Plans for a new center for applied behavior analysis at Missouri Southern are discussed on a Newsmakers program airing the week of November 22 on KGCS-TV.  The program features MSSU psychology department chair Holly Hackett and faculty member Ayla Schmick.  The program airs weeknights and can also be seen on the station YouTube site at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4M_5UR-YLCc

The Meals on Wheels program in the Joplin region is the focus of a Newsmakers program airing in November.  It features Jennifer Shotwell, director of the Area Agency on Aging.  The program may be seen weeknights the week of November 15 and on the station YouTube site at  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNAQx0z5yOY

October 2020


The Southern Broadcasters Club at MSSU has kicked off a new season of the program “Southern Nights” on KGCS-TV.  Subtitled “A New Beginning,” the show features student comedy and entertainment, ranging from painting to cooking and interviewing.   The program may be seen weeknights on KGCS-TV and is also posted on the station YouTube site at  https://youtu.be/9BlnnS1NXnk

The Lion Co-op at Missouri Southern is the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing on KGCS the week of October 18.  It features co-director Andrea Cullers discussing operations and services provided for students at the University.   The program may be seen weeknights on KGCS-TV and on the station YouTube site.

Plans for the November General Election in Missouri are the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the week of October 11 on KGCS.  The program features Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft.   It airs weeknights on the station and is posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

Public works projects, including street and storm water work, is the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the first week of October on KGCS-TV.  The program features Joplin Public works Director, David Hertzberg.  It airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”

September 2020


The long-time Director of Creative Services for KGCS-TV, Bill Hunt, is the featured guest on the Newsmakers program airing at the end of September.  During the program, he reflects on his career of more than 40 years in the local television industry.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the station YouTube channel at  https://youtu.be/DzxlIARNI_Q

The increasing need for blood donations is the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing on KGCS the week of September 20.  It features Chris Pilgrim from the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the station YouTube channel at  https://youtu.be/aYVhKfjO6ew

Presentations from the Caribbean Semester at Missouri Southern are being recorded and airing on KGCS-TV.   The presentations cover a wide variety of topics related to that region of the world.  In addition to airing evenings on KGCS, the lectures are also posted on the station YouTube site, KGCS Missouri Southern.

Crosslines of Joplin is the focus of the Newsmakers interview program airing the week of September 13 on KGCS.  The interview features the agency director, Rodney Rambo.  He discusses services offered and expanded needs resulting from the pandemic.  Newsmakers airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS YouTube site at   https://youtu.be/2cstK1SQXT4

Services provided by the Community Clinic of Southwest Missouri are featured in the Newsmakers program airing the week of September 6 on KGCS.  The interview features the agency director, Stephanie Brady, discussing operations and how they have adapted due to the pandemic.  The program airs weeknights on KGCS and may be seen weeknights on the station YouTube channel at  https://youtu.be/3T8hcBKgWXU

Students are working on programming in the KGCS studio, including the cooking program “Lion Dine.” Communication major Dillon Noblett hosts the program, which airs evenings on KGCS.

August 2020

July 2020


KGCS will provide live coverage of the 2020 City of Joplin July 4th Fireworks show from the Missouri Southern campus.  Video will be broadcast on KGCS and streamed on the station YouTube site.  Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, July 4.

May 2020


Candidates for the Joplin City Council appeared in a live Candidate Forum program on KGCS-TV at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 26.   The program featured eleven people seeking five seats on the council in the June 2 municipal election.  In addition to airing live, it was recorded and will be replayed prior to the election.  The program is also posted on the station YouTube site, KGCS Missouri Southern at https://youtu.be/FdFYNFujRm4

KGCS continues to air special editions of Newsmakers interviews recorded while the campus was closed for COVID-19.  They include a look at Admissions, Residential Life, Student Life, Career Services and MSSU students.   The programs air weeknights on KGCS and are posted on the station YouTube site, KGCS Missouri Southern  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9wiV1N6ozQbKYeToK_ypLA/videos

KGCS-TV will provide live and recorded coverage of the town hall sessions for the finalists for the search for Missouri Southern’s next president.  The sessions will be aired live in the afternoons the week of May 4, and replayed on the station in the evenings.   They are also be streamed live via social media and the University website. 

April 2020


KGCS-TV will cover the April meeting of the Missouri Southern Board of Governors meeting on Thursday, April 30.  The meeting will be recorded, and broadcast that evening and Sunday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m.

Students from KGCS-TV have been recognized for their production work in the annual Missouri Broadcast Educators Association media competition.  Awards include: Honorable Mention – Teen Hop Documentary, Honorable Mention – MSSU Lion Co-Op Food Pantry News Story, Second Place – Southern Nights March 2019, and Third Place – Newsmakers Cardinal Caravan 2019.  The statewide competition featured 192 entries from 13 different universities and colleges.

A student-produced cooking program, “Southern Dines” debuts on KGCS-TV in April.  The program was produced and hosted by MSSU communication major Dillon Noblett.  It features cooking from the kitchen in the KGCS studio.  It may be seen weeknights on KGCS-TV.

KGCS continues programming during the closing of campus. They include “virtual” Newsmakers interviews featuring information about Missouri Southern, including online classes and campus operations. The Webb City Farmers Market is the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the first week of April on KGCS-TV.  Rachel Lynch explains the market history and operations.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is posted on the station YouTube Channel.

March 2020


The Spring band concert, “Synergy,” featuring the Joplin High School Band and Missouri Southern Concert Band together airs the end of March on KGCS-TV.  The concert may be seen weeknights and is posted on the station YouTube site.

The Newsmakers program airing at the end of March takes a look at the organization “100 Women Who Care.”  Valerie Doerr and Stephanie Meek share information about how they work together to help non-profits in the area.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The recent performance at Missouri Southern by the 399th U.S. Army Band Jazz Combos is airing on KGCS-TV.  The performance was held in early March and recorded by KGCS-TV.  It is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The Newsmakers program airing in Mid-March takes a look at the group Friends of Wildcat Glades.  It features Robin Standridge and Cameo Harrington, sharing information about the organization and their activities.  It is also posted on the station YouTube site. 

The proposed bond issue for a new school and a school addition are featured on the Newsmakers program airing in March.  It features Joplin Schools Superintendent Dr. Melinda Moss and Kelli Perigo from the citizen’s committee.  It may be seen weeknights and is also posted on the Station YouTube site.

The Newsmakers program airing the first week of March focuses on heart health, with two heart disease survivors.  Bobby Ballard and Jana Smith share their stories and discuss the importance of health lifestyles and exercise.   The program airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS YouTube channel.

KGCS students continue to provide live coverage of Missouri Southern home basketball games.  The games are televised live and also streamed for MIAA coverage.  Students perform all aspects of coverage, from running cameras and announcing to directing behind the scenes.

The Newsmakers program airing the week of February 9 highlights the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce and the MOKAN Partnership.  Toby Teeter and Tony Robyn discuss the organizations and economic development work in the region.   In addition to airing on the station, it is also posted on the station YouTube channel.

The recent visit by the St. Louis Cardinals Caravan to Joplin is highlighted in a Newsmakers interview airing in February.  Students from KGCS helped interview players at the event, which was held on January 18.  In addition to airing on KGCS, the program is also posted on the station YouTube channel, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”

The Newsmakers program airing the first week of February on KGCS-TV takes a look at the organization “One Joplin.”  Guests discuss preparations underway for the 2020 Census and efforts to improve neighborhoods in the city.  The program airs weeknights on KGCS and is also posted on the station YouTube site. 

Two new Joplin Insider programs are now airing on KGCS-TV.  The program is hosted by Joplin Public Information Office Lynn Onstot, to inform citizens about news in the city.   One program features retiring Recycling Coordinator Mary Ann Phillips, discussing her career and recycling efforts in the city.  The second program takes a look at wastewater services in the city, with David Hertzberg and Lynden Lawson from the Joplin Public Works Department.

January 2020


The Newsmakers program airing the week of Jan. 26 features an interview with Missouri State Senator Bill White..  He discusses the start of the legislative session and bills filed for consideration.   The program airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site.

“Southern Safari,” the program at Missouri Southern State University that provides alumni and community members the opportunity to participate in group travel around the world, will be featured on the edition of “Newsmakers” airing the week of January 19.  The program features people who have participated in the overseas trips.  It is also posted on the station YouTube channel, “KGCS Missouri Southern.”

The St. Louis Cardinals Caravan made its annual visit to the MSSU campus in Joplin on Saturday, Jan. 18.  The program was held in Young Gym,  open to the public free of charge.  Fans had an opportunity to hear from players and alumni.  Autograph tickets were available at the door for youth.   KGCS helped to coordinate the visit, which was sponsored by the Cardinals, Zimmer Radio and Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance.
