December 2019


The Missouri Southern Board of Governors and the search for a new university president are the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the week of December 15 on KGCS.  The interview features Board Chair Bill Gipson and Vice Chair Alison Hershewe.  The program airs weeknights on KGCS-TV and is posted on the station YouTube site.

KGCS will provide live coverage of the Missouri Southern Commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 14.  The program will also be recorded and replayed at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 14.   DVDs of the ceremony will also be available for purchase. KGCS begins airing  home conference basketball games  for  Missouri Southern  State University starting the first week of December.  The coverage begins on Tuesday, Dec. 3 when the women's and men's teams host Pittsburg State.  The games may be seen live on KGCS and via the streaming serving from the MIAA Conference.

The  Shoal Creek Conservation and Education Center  is the focus of the  Newsmakers  program airing the first week of December.  It features an interview with  Kim Banner  from the Missouri Department of Conservation.  It will air weeknights on KCCS and is posted on the station  YouTube site

November 2019


A recent  presentation  about the Civil War in the region,  "Osage Perspective on the Civil War"  by Dr. Isaias McCaffrey airs on KGCS starting Monday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.  It is part of a speaker series hosted by Missouri Southern.  The presentation is also posted on the station  YouTube site.

Newsmakers  airing the week of November 24 features  Joplin Schools Superintendent Melinda Moss  discussing the proposal to update a number of elementary schools.   It airs weeknights and is posted on the station  YouTube channel.

The current  political situation  nationally and internationally is the focus of the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of November 17.  The interview features Missouri Southern political science professors  Will Delehanty, Brenden Higashi, and Nicholas Nicoletti.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS  YouTube site.

The  Newsmakers  program airing the week of November 10 takes a look at the visit of the  Stanley Cup  to Joplin and  tourism  efforts in the region, in an interview with Joplin CVB Director  Patrick Tuttle.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the station  YouTube channel.

The  Joplin Health Department  is the focus of the  Joplin Insider  program airing in November on KGCS-TV.   It focuses on services for women and children.  It may be seen in the evenings, and is also posted on the station  YouTube channel.

One of the  MSSU outstanding alumni  for 2019,  Esdra Lamy, is the guest on the  Newsmakers  program airing the first week of November.   He discusses his work in communication while at Southern and his current work in the media industry.   The program is also posted on the station  YouTube site.

October 2019


The upcoming sales tax proposal before  Joplin  voters,  "Proposition B,"  is the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing the week of October 27 on KGCS-TV.  The interview looks at the proposal to fund  police and fire pension plans.  It airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station  YouTube site.

Arts in the Joplin area  are the focus of the  Newsmakers  program airing the weeks of October 13 and 20 on KGCS-TV.   Connect2Culture  is the focus of the program airing the week of the 13th, and the  Joplin Regional Artists Coalition  is the focus of the program the week of the 20th.   Both programs air weeknights on KGCS, and are posted on the station  YouTube site.

news interview 2019Congressman Billy Long  shares information about news from Washington, including the impeachment inquiry and efforts to pass non-partisan measures during the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of October 6.   The interview is also posted on the station  YouTube site. 

KGCS provided   coverage  of the  Missouri Southern Homecoming Parade and football game  on Saturday, Oct. 5.   Both were being recorded for rebroadcast the next week.

September 2019


Highway Safety  and the  Missouri State Highway Patrol  are the focus of the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of September 22 on KGCS.   Sgt. John Lueckenhoff  discusses efforts to keep motorists safe and provides some tips.  The program airs weeknights and is on the station  YouTube site.

Newsmakers  programs airing in September include a look at the  Meals on Wheels  program in Joplin and the need for volunteers and the  Comunity Blood Center of the Ozarks  and the need for blood donations.   The programs air weeknights on KGCS-TV and are posted on the station  YouTube site.

Lectures from the  Oceania Semester  at Missouri Southern are being recorded and replayed on KGCS-TV during the Fall 2019 semester.  They include a presentation by  Dr. Jason Willand  about the  Great Barrier Reef.  The programs are also posted on the station  YouTube site.

KGCS  is celebrating  35 years of service, presenting programs from the archives on  "KGCS Rewind."   The programs are airing weeknights and are also posted on the station  YouTube channel.

Missouri Southern President  Dr. Alan Marble  is the guest on the  Newsmakers  interview airing the first week of September.  He shares information about his plans to retire next summer, as well as thoughts about the current academic year.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS  YouTube site.

Live sports  coverage returns on  KGCS-TV, with telecasts of  Missouri Southern home football games  for the 2019 season.  KGCS will air five home games, starting with the Thursday, September 5 match up with the University of Nebraska-Kearnery.  The games will also be replayed on Southern Sports Sunday.

August 2019


The  Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity  is the focus of the  Newsmakers  interview airing the last week of August.  The program takes a look at the 30 year history, as well as current programs of the organization.  It features  Executive Director  Scott Clayton.  The program airs the week of August 25 and is posted on the station  YouTube site.

Newsmakers  programs airing in mid-August include a visit with Missouri State Representative  Bob Bromley  about news from the legislature and an interview with Joplin Mayor  Gary Shaw  and Finance Director  Leslie Haase  about special taxes.  The programs may be viewed weeknights on KGCS during the weeks of August 11 and 18, and on the station YouTube channel.

A special exhibit and ongoing presentations at the  Joplin Museums  are featured on the  Newsmakers  interview airing the week of August 4 on KGCS-TV.  The program features Museum Director  Christopher Wiseman.  It is also posted on the  KGCS YouTube channel.

Study abroad  opportunities at  Missouri Southern  are highlighted on the series  "Window on the World."  Five new programs were recorded this summer, and are currently airing.  They feature students and faculty sharing their experiences.   The program airing the week of August 4 features a trip to Mexico.  It is also posted on  YouTube.

July 2019


Activites at  George Washington Carver National Monument, restoration of an historic schoolhouse in Neosho, and plans for the Joplin Emancipation Park Days are discussed on the  Newsmakers  interview airing the week of July 28.   Guests are  Jim Heaney, Kim Mailes, and Chalise Cooper.  The program is also posted on the  KGCS YouTube site.

Newsmakers  takes a look at the  McDonald County Museum  in an interview airing in July.  The program features  Karen Dobbs, discussing the displays and features at the museum.  It is also posted on the KGCS  YouTube site.

The new  Joplin  Insider  program on KGCS takes a look at road and work projects, with an interview featuring Joplin Public Works Director David Hertzberg.  The program airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS  YouTube site.

KGCS has moved to a  new over-the-air broadcast channel.  The station moved to Channel 21  on Friday, July 12.  Persons viewing broadcast programming will need to re-tune their receivers.

June 2019


Joplin-area community service organizations are highlighted with interviews by students in a  special Newsmakers  program airing the week of June 23 on KGCS.  The interviews feature  Joplin NALA Read, Crosslines, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the MSSU Lion Co-Op. The program is also posted on the  KGCS YouTube channel.

The  first graduate  to walk across the stage with a four-year degree at Missouri Southern and her faculty advisor share their memories on a  Newsmakers  interview airing the week of June 16.   Barbara Bevins  and  Conrad Gubera  reflect upon the graduation 50 years ago and their careers since then. 

Two students from KGCS-TV received  scholarship awards  from the  Missouri Broadcasters Association.  The awards for seniors  Zach Dobbs  and  Ashlea Zumwalt  were announced at the MBA annual convention in June.

May 2019


KGCS is featuring interviews with some of the  retiring faculty members  from  Missouri Southern State University, on the  Newsmakers  television program.  They include Kelly Larson, Terry Marion, Richard Laird and Ann Jaros.   The interviews air weeknights on KGCS and are posted on the station  YouTube channel.

Commencement ceremonies  for  Missouri Southern  and area high schools will be covered live by KGCS in May.   The Southern ceremonies will take place at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.  The following week features coverage of three area high schools:   Neosho  at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16,  Carl Junction  at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, and  Joplin  at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 19.   DVD copies  of the ceremonies are also available for  purchase  through the  KGCS website.

The  Newsmakers  interview program airing the week of May 5 takes a look at  academics at Missouri Southern.  It features MSSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs,  Dr. Paula Carson.   It airs weeknights and can also be seen on the station  YouTube site.

The concept of  Smart Cities  is explored on the  Newsmakers  interview program airing the first week of May.  The program features  Patty Heagel  from the City of Joplin.   It is also posted on the KGCS  YouTube site.

April 2019


The Joplin television program  "Teen Hop"  was honored at the  Regional Media Hall of Fame  event held on April 30 at Missouri Southern.   The evening included a viewing of a video featuring  oral history interviews  with people who danced on the program in the 1950s, 60s and 70s and the presentation of the award to KODE-TV.  The video may be seen on the KGCS  YouTube site.

Missouri State Senator Bill White  is the guest on the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of April 21 on KGCS-TV.  He provides an update on the legislative session underway in Jefferson City.  The program is also posted on the  KGCS YouTube site.

The  Newsmakers  interview program airing the week of April 7 focuses on  political news  at the local, state, and national level.  It features Missouri Southern political science professors  Nicole Shoaf, Will Delehanty, and Nicholas Nicoletti.  It is also posted on the station  YouTube  site.

A proposed ordinance to help with  storm water issues  in the City of  Joplin  is explained on the  Newsmakers  interview airing the week of April 14 on KGCS-TV.    The program features Joplin Recycling Coordinator  Mary Anne Phillips.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is posted on the station  YouTube site.

March 2019


The student-produced program  "Southern Nights"  features a look at Robinson Crusoe week at Missouri Southern news.  It airs the last week of March on KGCS and is posted on the station  YouTube site.

The  Missouri Broadcast Educators Association  annual college media competition  recognizes KGCS students with awards  for their video work.  They include recognition in Video/PSA and Video/Special program categories.  A complete list of awards can be found on the  awards section  of the KGCS website.

Developments at the  Joplin Regional Airport, including additional commercial air service, are the focus of the  Joplin Insider  program airing on KGCS.  The interview features Airport Director  Steve Stockham.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is also posted on the station  YouTube site.

Mental health awareness is the focus of the  Newsmakers  interview airing the last week of March.  The program features two representatives from  Joplin NAMI, Matthew Porte and Keith Dunn.  It is also posted on the  KGCS YouTube site.

A proposal to extend a  sales tax  in  Jasper County  is the topic of discussion on the  Newsmakers  interview program airing the week of March 17.  It features Darieus Adams and Erik Theis.  It is also posted on the station  YouTube site.

The new president of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce,  Toby Teeter, is the guest on the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of March 10 on KGCS.  The program is also posted on the station  YouTube site.

The  Newsmakers  interview program airing the first week of March focuses on the  Joplin Workshops  and services provided by the organization.  It features the director,  Jeff Jones.  It is also posted on the KGCS  YouTube  site.

February 2019


The student-produced program  Southern Nights  takes a look at  Black History Month  in February.  The program airs on KGCS and is posted on  YouTube.

A special student-produced  Newsmakers  program featuring the  St. Louis Cardinals Caravan  visit to Joplin airs the week of February 17 on KGCS.   The program features highlights from the caravan stop and interviews with players, alumni and broadcasters.  It is also posted on the station  YouTube  site.

The  United States Air Force Band of Mid-America concert  at Missouri Southern is featured in a special program airing on KGCS-TV.  The concert included a salute to the 20th anniversary of the first Lunar landing by Apollo astronauts. In addition to airing on KGCS, it is posted on the station  YouTube  site.

The annual  Carl Junction Business Expo  is the focus of a  Newsmakers  program airing in February.  The program features  Garrett Terry, Ashley Butcher, and Gary Stubblefield.  The program airs the week of February 24 and is posted on the station  YouTube  channel.

A new organization in the Joplin region designed to help non-profit organizations is the focus of the  Newsmakers  program airing the week of Feb. 10.  The interview focuses on  100 Women Who Care, with  Valerie Doerr and Stephanie Meek.  It is also posted on  YouTube.

The  Early Head Start  program sponsored by Economic Security is discussed on a  Newsmakers  interview airing the first week of February.  The interview features  Stephanie Massey and Julie Chappie.  It addition to airing on KGCS, it is posted on the station  YouTube channel.

January 2019


The  Southeast Kansas Humane Society  is featured on a  Newsmakers  interview airing the last week of January.  The program features  Jasmine Kyle  discussing their operations and services.  It is also posted on the KGCS  YouTube channel.

KGCS is  airing  a recording of the recent  St. Louis Cardinals Caravan  visit.  It features players and announcers on the stage at Taylor Performing Arts Center at Missouri Southern.  The players answer questions from fans in the audience.  In addition to airing on the station, it is also posted on the KGCS  YouTube channel.

KGCS students  helped with the  St. Louis Cardinals Caravan  visit to Joplin on January 19.   They provided coverage of the event and recorded interviews for an upcoming program.

KGCS-TV students continue working on  live coverage  of  Missouri Southern home basketball  games.  Students serve many roles, including announcing, operating cameras and directing.  The games also stream live through the MIAA and are recorded for rebroadcast.

December 2018


Missouri 7th District Congressman Billy Long is featured on the Newsmakers interview airing at the end of December on KGCS.  He discusses the upcoming changes in Congress and issues facing the country.  In addition to airing on KGCS, the program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

KGCS will provide live coverage of the Winter Commencement ceremonies at Missouri Southern State University at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.  The station is also selling DVD copies, which are available for ordering through the station website.

The Missouri Southern Cross Country Team is highlighted on the Newsmakers program airing in December.  The interview features Coach Jamie Burnham and runners Ashlee Kuykendall and Gidieon Kimutai.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is posted on the YouTube site.

Road construction and Public Works in Joplin is the topic of the new Joplin Insider program airing on KGCS-TV.  The program features Joplin Public Works Director David Hertzberg.  It may be seen weeknights and is on the station YouTube site.

Newsmakers features former Missouri State Senator Gary Nodler, discussing the honor of receiving the Webster Medallion Award.  The program airs on KGCS and is also posted on the station YouTube site.

KGCS is providing live coverage of home Missouri Southern MIAA Conference basketball games again this season, covering both women's and men's action.  Students work all levels of production, from directing to announcing.   In addition to airing live, the games are streamed on the MIAA Network.

November 2018


Suicide awareness and prevention is the focus of a Newsmakers program airing in late November on KGCS-TV.  The interview features Debbie Fitzgerald and Stephen McCullough from the Ozark Center in Joplin.   It is also posted on the station YouTube site.

A Newsmakers program airing in mid-November presents information about the Swedish company H&M and a look at Swedish culture.  The interview features Michaela Wallin.  It is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

An expert on the Swedish music group ABBA, Carl Magnus Palm, is the guest on the Newsmakers interview program airing the second week of November.   The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

Efforts to help small businesses prepare for cyber attacks are the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing the first week of November on KGCS-TV.  The interview features Jason Rincker and Ken Surbrugg discussing a Cyber Awareness 360 event in Joplin.  The program is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

October 2018


The Newsmakers program airing the last week of October features Missouri Southern Political Science professors providing insight into the November election, discussing candidates and issues before voters.  The program features Dr. Nicholas Nicoletti, Dr. Nicole Shoaf, Dr. Will Delehanty, and Dr. Charles Clark.  It is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

A new student-produced program, "Southern Nights," is airing on KGCS-TV.  It features interviews, music and fun.  The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

September 2018


Lectures from the Nordic Semester at Missouri Southern are airing on KGCS-TV.   The first lectures of the semester feature Eric Hinrichs, from the Danish Society in St. Louis.   The programs are also posted on the station YouTube site.

The 21st annual Carl Junction Bluegrass Festival is the topic of discussion on the Newsmakers interview program airing the week of September 16th on KGCS-TV.  Guests are Gary Stubblefield and Holly Hukill.  The program is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

Live coverage of Missouri Southern home football games returns for the 2018 season on KGCS-TV.   The first telecast is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, when the Lions host Lindenwood University.   The game coverage is produced by staff and students.   The games will also be replayed Sunday evenings on Southern Sports Sunday.

Missouri Southern President Dr. Alan Marble is the guest on a Newsmakers interview airing the first part of September.  He discusses the start of the academic year, and shares good news from campus.  In addition to airing on KGCS, the program is posted on the station YouTube site.

August 2018


The 25th anniversary of the Ronald McDonald House in Joplin is featured on a Newsmakers interview airing at the end of August on KGCS-TV.  The program features director Annette Thurston, sharing information about the history and services provided.  In addition to airing on KGCS, it is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

Missouri Southern Athletics are featured in a Newsmakers program airing in late August on KGCS-TV.  MSSU Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman shares information about a new video board and upcoming sports seasons.  In addition to airing, the interview is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The Fall 2018 semester at Missouri Southern is the Nordic Semester.  A Newsmakers program airing in August features information about planned events, during an interview with Dr. Chad Stebbins.   The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

Joplin voters are being asked to go to the polls in August to decide on a Use Tax proposal, and the Newsmakers interview airing the first week of August looks at that issue.  It features Drew Kimble and Amber Duncan from the citizen task force, and city finance director Leslie Haas.  The interview is also posted on the KGCS YouTube channel.

July 2018


The Newsmakers interview airing the last week of July looks at developments in Webb City.  It features City Administrator Carl Francis and Mayor Lynn Ragsdale.  The program is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

Efforts to help local non-profit agencies are the focus of Give Joplin Day, explained in the Newsmakers interview airing the week of July 15.  The program provides information about the day of giving on July 19.   The program airs weeknights and is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The annual Carver Day celebration and the 75th anniversary of George Washington Carver National Monument are highlighted on the Newsmakers interview airing the week of July 8 on KGCS.  The program features park ranger Curtis Gregory.   The interview is also posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

Study abroad by biology students to Italy is the focus of a Window on the World interview program airing in July.  Students discuss how the trip provided opportunities outside of the classroom to learn and experience new culture.  The program airs on KGCS and is also posted on the station YouTube site.

Students who traveled to China as part of a Plaster College of Business study abroad trip are featured on a Window on the World interview airing in July.  They share their experiences and what they learned from the trip.  The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The Newsmakers program airing the first week of July takes a look at the future of the conservation center in Joplin.   Warren Rose from the Missouri Department of Conservation discusses plans by the department to operate the building in Wildcat Park.  The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

June 2018


Study abroad trips from Missouri Southern are highlighted on the series, "Window on the World."   The first interview focuses on the honors program visit to Ireland.  It airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site.

Newsmakers interviews airing in June feature communication students interviewing area community agency representatives.   They worked together on projects as part of a capstone course in Spring 2018.   The interviews feature information about the projects and the organizations.   In addition to airing on KGCS, they are also posted on the station YouTube site.

The Newsmakers interviews airing the first weeks of June feature retiring faculty and staff members from Missouri Southern State University.  They include Physical Plant Director Bob Harrington, Music Professor Dr. Jeffrey Macomber, and Biology Professor Dr. Vicki Roettger.   The interviews air weeknights and may also be seen on the station YouTube channel.

May 2018


The Newsmakers program airing the week of May 20 takes a look at an upcoming Corvette gathering in Joplin.  It features representative from the 4StateVette club.  It airs weeknights and is posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

MOSO Update, the student-produced news program on KGCS-TV, takes a look at Spring 2018 activities on the Missouri Southern campus.  It airs starting the week of May 13 and is also posted on the station YouTube channel.

KGCS will provide live coverage of the Missouri Southern Commencement Ceremonies as well as three area high school ceremonies being held on campus.  The MSSU ceremonies will air at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 12.  High school ceremonies include Neosho at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 , Carl Junction at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 18, and Joplin at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 20.   The station is also selling DVD copies of the ceremonies.  They may be ordered online through the KGCS website.

KGCS presented student awards at the annual Communication Department awards ceremony in April.  Students were recognized for their work at the station and on television productions.  Complete details may be found under the "Station Awards" link on the website. 

The Spring Percussion Ensemble Concert from the Missouri Southern Music Department is featured on KGCS-TV.  The program is also posted on the station YouTube Channel.  The station is also covering other Spring music performances from MSSU, for airing and posting on YouTube.

March 2018


A candidate forum featuring candidates for Joplin City Council aired live on KGCS-TV on Monday, March 26.  It will repeat a number of times before the April 3 election.  It is also posted on the station YouTube site.

The new edition of the student-produced newscast MOSO Update is airing on KGCS-TV.  The program features a variety of topics, including reports on activities in music and theatre on campus and a visit with a campus police officer.   The program is also posted on the station YouTube site.

Street projects and recovery projects underway in Joplin are two of the topics covered in the Newsmakers program airing the week of March 11 on KGCS-TV.   The program features Joplin Public Works Director David Hertzberg.  In addition to airing on the station, it is also posted on the station YouTube site.

A recent study looking at tourism efforts in Joplin is the topic of discussion on the Newsmakers interview program airing the week of March 4.   Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Patrick Tuttle discusses the results of the survey and possible plans for the future.  The program airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site.

Efforts to educate local businesses about Cyber Security threats are the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing the week of February 25 on KGCS.  Jason Rincker and Karma Wright share information and discuss an upcoming conference planned in Joplin.  The program airs weeknights on KGCS and is posted on the station YouTube site.

Interviews with St. Louis Cardinals Baseball players are featured on the Newsmakers interview airing the week of February 11 on KGCS-TV.   The program includes interviews done by students during the Cardinals Caravan visit with Alex Mejia, Greg Garcia, Jose Martinez, John Gant, Danny Cox, Tom Lawless, and Kyle McClellan.  In addition to airing in the evenings, the program is posted on the KGCS YouTube site.

The Joplin City Council recognized KGCS-TV for its service in covering their meetings and city government at the February 5 council meeting.    Joplin Mayor Michael Seibert presented a proclamation to station representatives.   Those present at the meeting were Communication Dept. Chair Ward Bryant, KGCS General Manager Judy Stiles, and Communication majors Abby West and Maddy West.

Joplin proclamation presentationThe 75th anniversary of George Washington Carver National Monument is the focus of the Newsmakers program airing the first week of February on KGCS.   The program features Superintendent James Heaney, Ranger Randall Becker, and Volunteer Gayle O'Hare.   They discuss the history of the park and current programs.   In addition to airing on KGCS, the interview is posted on the station YouTube site.

A special Native America Art Exhibit at Spiva Center for the Arts is the focus of the Newsmakers interview airing the week of January 28 on KGCS.  The interview features Executive Director Josie Mai.  In addition to airing on the station, it is also posted on YouTube.

The annual St. Louis Cardinals Caravan visited Joplin on Saturday, Jan. 13.  The visit featured current and former players, and an opportunity for fans to meet the players and for children to get autographs.  KGCS recorded the public program.  In addition to airing on the station, it is posted on the station YouTube site.
