Program Highlight: Supply Chain Management

With an expected 19% employment rise between 2023-2033, Supply Chain Management is an excellent addition to the already impressive offerings in the Plaster School of Business. This emphasis will teach students the facets and complexities of Supply Chain Management and opens them to the possibilities the field has to offer.

What is Supply Chain Management?

Also known as operations or logistics, Supply Chain Management is the efficient and effective movement of goods and services from warehouse to consumer, or the process of transporting goods from warehouse shelves to consumer hands. This degree path will provide students with the analytical knowledge and tools to design business processes involving various functional departments. In the ever-evolving global economy, businesses need team-oriented individuals who are strategic, can manage information, engage customers and suppliers, and integrate processes across functional departments and industries.

What will students study?

Those pursuing the Supply Chain Management emphasis will study the practical applications of supply chain management with data analytics techniques to prepare students for their career. Experimental learning opportunities and courses such as Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution; Operations Management, and Business Communication will give students the knowledge and skills they need for the job market.

Supply Chain Management can help students develop skills such as analytical thinking, problem solving, project management, leadership by teaching data analytics, and more. MSSU’s program provides skills that reflect the needs of the field.

Trending topics in the industry include integrating advanced technologies (AI, machine learning, robotics, etc.), risk management and resilience, and sustainability. Courses like Procurement, Quality Management, as well as Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution may cover some of these topics.

Why pursue this degree?

Supply Chain Management is seeing significant job growth. In addition to the aforementioned statistic, the U.S. Department of Labor also reports that the median salary for supply chain professionals with a degree is upwards of $73,000.

“Entry-level supply chain analysts earn around $60,000-75,000, while experienced managers like supply chain managers earn an average of $165,978,” said Dr. Kwanheui Cheon, assistant professor of Supply Chain Management at MSSU.

Since Supply Chain Management encompasses many sides of the industry, there are many job opportunities and careers in this field. MSSU’s program prepares students to pursue career paths such as Materials Analyst, Purchasing Agent/Analyst, Supplier Distribution Manager, Logistics Analyst, and Operations Manager.

“By offering a global perspective, supply chain management programs prepare students to work in global markets,” said Cheon. “Multinational corporations need supply chain managers who provide international career opportunities, so studying global trade regulations and buyer-supplier relationships in global markets can provide opportunities to work in various countries and regions.”

A unique feature of MSSU’s program is that courses are offered entirely online and in-person, allowing students to balance their responsibilities while also completing the degree from anywhere in the world. No matter how or where a student studies, MSSU’s Supply Chain Management program can prepare students for their career.
