Upon admissions to MSSU, students may declare Social Work as their projected major. These students are considered pre-social work majors, but does not guarantee admittance into the Social Work program. As a pre-social work major, you will be assigned an advisor in the department to guide through program of study. All students intending to obtain a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) are required to apply to the Social Work program and complete the formal admission process to be fully accepted as a Social Work major.
Eligibility to Apply
1. Complete the 42 credit hours of general education requirements. It is preferable for student to have completed 60 credit hours by the end of the spring semester they apply. This is generally second semester of sophomore year or last semester of associate degree.
2. Complete the pre-requisite courses with a grade of C or above: PSY 100: General Psychology; SOC 110: Introduction to Sociology; PSC 120 American Government or concurrent enrollment.
3. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.70 or higher.
4. Preferred completion of SW 231: Introduction to Human Services with a grade of C or better; or enrollment at the close of the application semester.
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Application Process
Applications have a firm due date of March 15th for priority placement consideration for following academic year. A secondary application timeframe may be re-opened in same spring semester if cohort spots are still available with firm deadline of July 30th.
