Workshop Options, 9:25 - 11:30 am

Book Making:

Create handmade books using a variety of techniques including stitching and origami. Participants will create books using a variety of materials and binding techniques. At least 2 techniques will be taught, and participants will walk away with handmade books and skills to create more. These are traditional and contemporary book forms. Book making has become popular again in the era of mixed media arts and fiber arts. These books can be utilitarian or made into artistic creations. Instructor: Jessica Harbison & Adonna Johnson

Foam Reduction Printmaking:

In this Foam Reduction Printmaking lesson, students will learn to create a 3-step foam relief print using reduction printing techniques. The lesson includes a demonstration of standards, objectives, and step-by-step instructions to guide students in creating their own artwork. The class will explore the work of Andy Warhol and other Pop Art artists, discussing key characteristics of the style. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to identify Pop Art features and produce a successful foam relief print. Instructor: Scott Murray

Fused Glass Jewelry Pendants:

Learn how to create one-of-a-kind fused glass pendants. Students will use the elements of design: color, texture, space and the principles of design: balance, rhythm, variety and unity to help create dynamic designs. In this fast paced, exciting class, students will learn to cut, grind, clean, glue and arrange fusing glass into several layers that will melt and fuse in the kiln. The pendants can be picked up the following week. Instructor: Jessica Sellers

Into the Vault: MSSU African Art Collection Curatorial Experience:

This session will provide students with first-hand curatorial experience in museum collection care and collection management. Students will work directly with artifacts from the "vault" of the MSSU African Art Collection and act as "curators" for the session. Through discussion and lecture, students will learn the history of the collection and the challenges of museum management. Students will also learn about the basics on collection care and preservation. Acting as curators, students will select 1-2 artifacts to work through a collection care report, with the opportunity to carefully handle the selected object(s). Students will utilize the online catalogue for the collection to complete their reports. It isn't exactly Indiana Jones, but it does get you close to unveiling the mysteries of the unknown! Instructor: Dr. Christine Bentley

Majolica Painting:

Learn the historically rich and colorful ceramic technique of majolica glazing (painting overglaze), a process where colorful imagery is painted over a white-but-not-fired-glaze surface. This technique is somewhat similar to watercolor painting on paper, allowing participants to treat the surface of the forms as a canvas. Participants are guided through developing imagery and transferring it onto pre-glazed bisque bowls and tiles. (fired work can be picked up the following week) Instructor: Frank A. Pishkur

Portfolio Review:

Need feedback on your artwork?  Bring a USB drive with up to 10 pieces that you want to discuss (ideally, these would be in a Powerpoint, but we can also look at jpegs or videos).  You may also bring up to 3 physical artworks if you would like.  MSSU Art & Design faculty will lead a group critique to help you improve your portfolio and get ready for college and scholarship applications. Instructors: Elmira Bagherzadeh (Design) & Kyle McKenzie (Studio)

Typographic Portraits:

In this graphic design workshop, we will rediscover the fun and the creative side of letters by using their abstract forms and shapes in new ways. After learning the basics of typography and Adobe Illustrator, students recreate a famous portrait using letters and words rather than pencil marks or brush strokes. The final images might look realistic as the letters and words overlap, creating the textural qualities of hair and skin, or the images might be more abstract as a J becomes a nose and a B becomes an ear. Instructor: Ed Outhouse.

Art on the Spot

Students will be divided into teams based on their schools. Smaller school groups will be combined. In this activity, students will be given a prompt to create a collaborative artwork. The teams will have 45 minutes to create an artwork based on the prompt using the materials provided. Every team will be given the same supplies to work with to create their masterpiece.
