Fire

Stay calm and quickly follow the steps outlined below:

  1. With a minor fire that appears controllable, immediately contact the University Police at extension 2222. Then, discharge the fire extinguisher at the base of the flame.
  2. If necessary or if directed to do so by the University Police, activate the building alarm.
  3. On large fires that do not appear controllable activate the building alarm and immediately contact the University Police at extension 2222. Then evacuate all affected rooms and close all doors to confine the fire and reduce oxygen. Do not lock the doors.
  4. When the building alarm is sounded or when told to leave by the University Police, walk quickly to the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
  5. Assist people with disabilities in exiting the building. Do not use elevators during fire. Smoke is the greatest danger in a fire, so stay near the floor where the air will be more breathable.
  6. Once outside, move to a clear area away from the affected building. Keep the street and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel.
  7. If requested, assist the University Police.
  8. Do not return to an evacuated building unless directed to do so by the University Police.

If you become trapped in a building during a fire and a window is available, place an article of clothing (shirt, coat, etc.) outside the window as a marker for emergency personnel, if there's no window, stay near the floor, where the air will be more breathable. Shout at regular intervals to alert emergency personnel of your location.

Training for fire extinguisher use is available through the University Police.
