Why we Call it a Game

The Great Game of Business was originally a phrase I used in an effort to make business a little less intimidating to people. I wanted them to see business the way I saw business. I wanted them to realize that it didn’t have to be an instrument of exploitation, or a tool of greed, and you didn’t need an MBA to understand it. 

Some people outside the company later took offense at the phrase. They thought we were trivializing business by referring to it as a game. Well, there’s a grain of truth to that objection. While I didn’t mean to trivialize business, I was certainly trying to demystify it, knock it off its pedestal. I wanted to break down the walls of hype and nonsense that make business an elite sport for the select few and keep everybody else in the dark and out of the money.

And I wasn’t telling people anything that wasn’t true. Business is a game, after all. I’m not saying that it’s like a game. I mean it’s a game as a form of human activity. It’s not an art or a science. It’s a competitive undertaking, with rules, ways of keeping score, elements of luck and talent, winners and losers, and all of the other characteristics of games. What’s more, it can be as exciting, as challenging, as interesting, and as much fun as any game you can think of-provided, that is, you understand what’s going on.

The difference, of course, is that the stakes are higher. You’re playing for your livelihood, for your family’s welfare, for the future. You play for the jobs of the people you work with. You play for your customers and your customers’ customers, and for the health of both your community and theirs.

And you play for money-potentially lots of money. As we all know, people who play the business game well can make a fortune at it. Okay, so some of them get greedy and keep the winnings to themselves. But I wanted people to understand that business doesn’t have to work that way. There was no reason you couldn’t set up a company so that everybody could play the game together and share the rewards. Then the game of business would truly be great, in the full meaning of the word.
