University Police Department

police shield Welcome and thank you for visiting the web site for the University Police Department of Missouri Southern State University. It is our hope that by providing information regarding the services provided by this department the students, faculty/staff, parents and visitors will have a more positive experience.

To assist in our effort to enhance communication, MSSU has contracted with the Joplin Police Department (JPD) to provide dispatching services for the University Police Department.

As of January 4, 2017, for emergency situations, please call 911 (from a campus phone you must dial 8 for an outside line).  The Joplin dispatcher will dispatch a UPD officer (as well as other support services) to the incident on campus.

For situations that are not an emergency, but still require a police officer to investigate (thefts, non-injury traffic accidents, assaults, etc.) please call 417-623-3131 (JPD Communications) and they will direct a UPD officer to the incident location.

For service calls, please continue to call 417-626-2222.  Those calls would include vehicle unlocks and jump starts, building access, parking issues, lost items, safety and traning programs, information, etc.

If you should have questions regarding this change or would like additional information, pleas call Ken Kennedy, MSSU Police chief, at 417-625-9741.

If you would like to give the University Police Department a tip about a crime on Southern's campus you can send the information to UPD@mssu.edu

Registered Sex Offenders on Campus

A federal law, the Campus Sex Crimes Prevention Act amendment to the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Registration Act, requires registered sex offenders to indicate when they are enrolled or employed at institutions of higher learning.

The law further requires state law enforcement authorities, in this case the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, to provide Missouri Southern State University Police Department with a list of registered sex offenders who have indicated that they are either enrolled or employed at the MSSU campus.

Missouri Southern State University is required to inform the campus community of the existence of the list and where it is available for review. The list is available to be viewed at the MSSU Police Department, 726 N. Mission Hills Drive, Joplin, MO.
